Sealing a Device at the Point of Seizure
A practical step-by-step for first responders: power state decisions, bag selection, seal logging and exhibit handover.
Quick Answer
Default position: a powered device is left powered. Powering down can trigger full-disk encryption, prompt PIN re-entry on next boot and lose volatile memory. Isolate the device first, then assess.
Power State: On Stays On

Choosing the Right Bag
Match the bag to the device class. Phones and tablets need full RF shielding across cellular, Wi-Fi, BT and GNSS bands. Laptops in lid-open state need larger bags rated for 5GHz Wi-Fi. Multi-device kits should not share a single bag.
Logging the Seal
Record bag serial, seal time, exhibit reference and seizing officer on the exhibit label. The same data goes into the property log and the case file. Photograph the sealed bag in situ.
Handover and Transport
Maintain continuous custody through to the property store or DFU. Each handover is a logged event — receiving officer, time, condition of seal — with the bag remaining sealed throughout.
